What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this educational health site produced by Children’s Hospital Boston includes health guides for young men on a wide range of topics, including general physical health, emotional health, and sexual health. There are also a few guides aimed at parents. The sexuality and health section includes factual information about birth control and STD prevention and offers resources for teens who are unsure of their sexual orientation. Parents may want to review the sexuality sections, since every family has different opinions on the best approach to discussing sex and sexual health.

  • The site's mission is "to empower teen boys and young men around the world to take an active role in their own health care." To that end, it encourages boys to seek help when they need it and offers resources for additional information and guidance.
  • There's some discussion of abusive relationships and self-injury.
  • The site has a section on sexuality and health that includes factual information about puberty, birth control, STD prevention, and teen parenting; it also discusses the physical and emotional benefits of delaying sexual activity. The site offers resources for teens figuring out their sexual orientation.

Is it any good?

Although it has fewer interactive features than its sister site Young Women's Health, YOUNG MEN'S HEALTH takes the same straightforward approach to educating teens about physical, emotional, and sexual health. A project of Children's Hospital Boston, the site encourages teen and preteen boys to read up on health issues ranging from asthma to STD prevention -- and to seek help when they need it. The guides are clear and comprehensive, recognizing that positive relationships, communication, and self-esteem are just as important as good nutrition and regular checkups when it comes to young men's health.

What families can talk about

  • Families may want to use this site as a jumping-off point to talk about sex and sexual health. Do teens feel comfortable asking their parents questions about sexual health? Why or why not? How can parents help teens make good choices when it comes to sex and relationships?

  • Families can talk about how communicating about feelings is an important part of being emotionally healthy. What are some healthy ways teens can express themselves when they're feeling angry or sad? Who can they talk to when they need help with a problem?
