Parents need to know that the site provides a fun, very visual way for kids to learn about basic business principles. Parents and teachers also can download fact sheets and view suggested activities that illustrate business competition, misleading advertising, and other topics.
Designed by the Federal Trade Commission to teach kids to be smarter consumers, YOU ARE HERE features a virtual mall where kids can play games and learn basic business concepts from store owners and shoppers. Each mall section is based on a different topic -- product promotion, business competition, security, and false advertising. Animated characters offer easy-to-understand instructions for the site's games and activities, which are well-designed and fun to play. Kids can learn the rationale behind product pricing by selecting the correct price point for various candy treats. Another game teaches kids about marketing by having them match a cell phone with the person it's designed for. The subject matter may not be something that initially would peak kids' interest, but the site’s activities -- which range from asking characters to explain things to a short film illustrating the history of business competition -- should keep kids engaged. Another plus: Navigating around the site is easy, thanks to a clickable mall map.
Online interaction: Kids can't interact with each other on the site.
Do ads make you want to buy things? What kinds of ads are targeted toward kids? What kind of reaction do you have when you see an ad for a toy or game?
How do you know when to believe an ad? Can you tell if an advertiser is being honest?
How can you tell if something is a good deal or not? Why do different companies offer different prices for things that seem really similar? How do you know which one to buy?
