What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site for preschoolers includes videos, activities, and games all related to the PBS series Wisharoo Park. Through the show's videos -- which combine puppets, animation, and live action stories -- kids ages 3 to 6 learn how to "recognize and appreciate their own individuality." The site currently has a lot of videos up for kids to watch but only a handful of games and offline activities. More features are listed as "Coming Soon" or slated to begin in summer 2011. There's a store where parents can purchase Wisharoo-related stuff.

  • The show and website both contain positive messages from sweet characters who teach kids social skills, self-confidence, and music through videos, games and offline activities.

  • An online store sells Wisharoo Park DVDs, songs (via iTunes), plush toys related to the show and a pre-loaded video viewer called a "Playaway."
  • There's currently no need to register or provide any personal information to use this website unless you want to receive the newsletter, which requires name, email address, and zip code. If you buy something in the store, you must of course provide your billing and payment info. The site's Privacy Policy states that it follows the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and that it collects non-personally identifiable information such as IP addresses and other sorts of information for analytics purposes.

Is it any good?

There's a tremendously positive beginning effort at WISHAROOPARK to help preschoolers grow in self-confidence. By trying new, positive skills on- and offline, as well as by watching Wisharoo's characters on the videos learn new things, too, the site promotes self-esteem through personal strengths. But the question remains: Can this simple site that currently has very few online games hold the attention of kids who may already be used to the other, interactive "bells and whistles" sites geared toward these youngest computer users, like Nick Jr. and Webkinz Jr.? Hopefully, as more content is added (some areas are currently marked "Coming Soon") it will grow the audience that it deserves.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the fact that, while there may not be a lot of online games here, there are some great offline activities. Which ones would your child like to try with you? Download the PDF to play at a "Politeness Party," or host a puppet show with your child's favorite Wisharoo Park characters.

  • This site is geared toward very young computer users whose time between television, computer, apps, and games can add up quickly past the recommended small daily amount for this age group, so discuss screen time limits.
