Parents need to know that We Give Books is an educational site that not only allows children to read for free, but also supports worldwide charities. It is a Pearson Foundation initiative. Members can pick from a variety of organizations that they want to donate to, and each time they read a book, the site in turn donates a book to that charity. The site supports each organization until a desired quantity of books is acquired, and then goes on to support another literacy campaign until that library is complete. Charities that We Give Books has supported in the past include Harlem Children's Zone, Hope for Haiti, Books Across America, and Global Explorers.
We Give Books builds libraries in countries that suffer from increasing illiteracy rates. According to UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) there are over 1 billion non-literate adults in the world. The site offers a brilliant way to encourage families to read together, also giving parents a wonderful opportunity to teach children about non-profit organizations and the importance of helping those in need. Details are provided about each charity that the site supports, so families can make an informed decision on which organization to help. Families can choose from a list of more than 100 books to read together. Choices include new releases and all-time favorite classics such as Good Night Goon, Before You Were Here, Mi Amor, and Corduroy Lost and Found.
Families can talk about non-profit organizations. What is their purpose and what kind of impact can they have? How does reading books on We Give Books help others?
Families can also talk about books and different places to find them -- from libraries, to sites like We Give Books, to book apps on mobile devices.
