What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this social network for girls is strong on privacy. Sweety High moderates user-created content and provides plenty of information on surfing safely. Girls' profiles are only visible to their friends, and there are parental controls for younger users' accounts. Parts of Sweety High focus on creativity and self-expression, but the site is also heavy on shopping, fashion, and celebrities.

  • Sweety High encourages girls to express themselves creatively, be respectful of others, and stay safe online. On the other hand, a lot of the content focuses on celebrities and shopping.
  • Not applicable.
  • The web series has some flirting and mild innuendo (a teenage boy talks about giving a girl "mouth-to-mouth ressucitation").
  • Swear words are censored from comments and other text areas.
  • There are no ads, but brands appear throughout the site, frequently in the form of contests.
  • User profiles are private -- only friends on the site can see them. Sweety High monitors all content for age-appropriateness and also offers PSAs that teach girls about cyber-safety. Girls under 13 need a parent's permission to sign up, and parents can modify (or delete) their child's content and settings.

What kids can learn

1

Kids can learn how to be respectful and safe in the social networking world while nurturing their creativity and self expression. Girls can film themselves singing or dancing, post the video on Sweety High, and give feedback to other "Sweeties." Sweety High's strict moderation and privacy controls ensure that content is for users' eyes only -- and that comments are kind and constructive.  Shopping and celebrity gossip easily overshadow self-esteem building.

What's it about?

Sweety High's school-themed social site lets girls interact with friends online, earn rewards, and upload photos and videos. An original web series called "Sweety" follows the lives of four high school BFFs; the teen-hosted "Food Star" features cooking tips and celebrity guests. Four times a year, Sweety High hosts "Be a Star," a contest that rewards talented tweens with real-life opportunities to pursue their dreams in fields like fashion design. Joining Sweety High is free, but you must be a member to enter "Be a Star" and get access to other premium features. Membership is $5.95 a month.

Is it any good?

Sweety High has some fun features and a stylish design. The video channels offer entertaining, well-produced fare, and some of the contests encourage creativity, like asking girls to write a song for the chance to duet with a well-known performer. The social networking features go beyond the basics -- girls can give each other hearts and gifts, and in turn, they'll earn karma points that unlock extra rewards. Sweety High does a good job creating a safe, positive atmosphere, and users' comments are encouraging and upbeat.

How kids will learn

Along with video production skills, girls can also learn a great deal about giving and receiving constructive criticism on videos that they upload for other "Sweeties" to see. Girls can earn hearts by doing activities on the site, and they can give hearts to other users to show appreciation for the videos and photos they've created. Giving away hearts earns girls karma points, which in turn unlocks access to new activities. It's a loop that makes Sweety High "sticky" while underscoring the importance of being supportive in a social world.

How parents can help

  • Introduce kids to the art of constructive criticism -- watch a performance and ask them what feedback they'd give to help the artist improve.
  • Take kids to live performances and encourage them to explore different genres of music or dance.

My daughter had the chance to be a "Foundation girl" for the social network, meaning she was part of the process of creating the site from the very beginning. I can definitely say it was built specifically for what tween girls like her want. She spends hours making music videos on the weekends to put on the site and loves posting back and forth with her friends from school on the weeknights (after homework is done and only for a predetermined amount of time of course). Plus, with the parent controls I'm able to monitor everything she does on the site.

Great place for tween girls
My girls have always loved making their own videos. This site gives them a chance to share them with others in a safe environment. They are really on target with the interests of tween girls and I can see the safety messages really laying a good foundation for internet use as they grow older.

Sweety High: 100% Sweet
This site is definitely a favorite in our home. Both my 9 year old and my 11 year old are Sweety fanatics, and as a parent I would definitely go to bat for this site. Is the content of the webseries shallow?...NO and even if it was it's what girls this age are talking about--whether us moms want to except it or not. I mean my daughters aren't about to read War and Peace anytime soon, so yes Sweety High is the site for my tween girls (and most definitely yours).
