Parents need to know that Pink Cookie is a fashion and lifestyle brand. To post on the site's message board, kids must register by entering a username, password, and email address. You can also include a website URL when you register, and other registered users will be able to see it, along with your email address, in your profile.
The PINK COOKIE site primarily showcases clothing from the fashion line of the same name: punky PJs, bags, boots, and other items emblazoned with pink bow-clad skulls, hearts, and other items. However, aside from checking out the brief catalog of clothes (and finding out where to buy them), there really isn't much to see or do on Pink Cookie. A designer's blog hasn't been updated in months; the Project Yourway section hosts occasional giveaways, but only about once a month.
Unfortunately, the most involved section of the site, its message board, contains a few privacy concerns. Members chose a profile photo from an image library featuring a gingerbread man and other icons, but can upload up to three images that are less than 75 KB with each post -- which, like text, will appear instantly, without any screening. Kids can also view a list of other registered users and email them. Granted, there aren't many posts on the boards, but if they ever get more active, the potential risks could be cause for concern.
Families can talk about sites designed to make you shop. Does a site like this make you want to buy things more? Can you have fun on the site without buying anything?
Fashion can be a fun way to express yourself -- but it can also make you focus a lot on your outward appearance. How can you draw the line between having fun with fashion and not obsessing about how you look?
Is it OK to email someone you don't know if you see their name listed on a website message board? Why or why not?
