What parents need to know

Parents need to know that PBS KIDS GO is an educational, jam-packed-with-fun site that will endear many kids with games, videos, and quests featuring their favorite PBS television show characters. Relatively new features such as The Great Word Quest, Wild Kratts, and the Webonatus Internet Academy add even more depth of learning, adventure, and fun to an already stacked site. This is high-quality online time for kids.

  • Many characters and games featured on this site offer kids great examples of positive, motivated, funny, and thoughtful attitudes.

  • Site rules state that any underwriters' logos featured on the site will be directed at adults, not children. Some of the PBS Kids shows, like Arthur, have commercial products created based on their characters, but nothing here directly pushes them to be viewed as such.
  • To register, kids need only make up a username and password. PBS' privacy policy says the most it will collect is first name, age, and state, as well as email addresses for contests. There's a parents and educators tab on the main pages of the site for further explanations of PBS's sites for kids; the section offers parent advice.

Is it any good?

PBS KIDS GO is a fantastically fun, educational site for kids that just keeps getting better with each addition. This site has added more winners to its already strong lineup of games and videos related to quality shows like Cyberchase, Arthur, and The Electric Company. Interactive games from newly featured shows like the Wild Kratts, which includes one game that teaches kids about habitats around the globe while they earn cool animal-power suits for their avatars, engage kids in multi-visit quests. The Great Word Quest offers a wealth of word play. The Webonauts Internet Academy teaches kids how to behave safely and responsibly online in virtual worlds.  The options for more fun, learning adventures go on and on...

Online interaction: Some portions of the site offer kids the option to add friends to their profile (but they have to know their friends' usernames to send an invite), send an email link to a game or video clip, and share site favorites through their profiles.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why this site is good practice for younger kids who are new to online normalcies like creating profiles, quests, and virtual worlds. Discuss the Webonauts Internet Academy's online motto "Observe, Respect, Contribute." What does that mean for your child's time online?

  • Even though PBS Kids shows and websites are often top-quality educational fare, when you add up time in front of the tube and the monitor, it can become too much screen time. Talk to your kids about your family's screen time limits.

  • Discuss the difference between PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go, and which one is more appropriate for your child's age, reading level, and Internet awareness. There's a definite step up in complexity, responsibility, and skill level (including ability to read) from the Kids to the Kids Go site.

Excellent Educational Website
When I first visited this website I thought about what child would truly enjoy it? Afterwards I’m now left with this, what parent wouldn’t enjoy their kids on this site? PBS Kids offers a great place for kids to visit, learn and have fun. It requires that children be able to read, but the site is very easy to navigate and parents can help all of those early readers. The site is full of activities, most that involve some of the children’s favorite PBS TV show characters, which can teach kids valuable information in fun and creative ways. In the section titled “Don’t Buy It”, the site explains to kids how advertisements can be misleading and encourages smart ways to spend money. Lessons that are incredibly valuable for children to learn at an early age. There is another section titled “Eeko World” which teaches children important things about the environment, recycling and how kids can do their part to help in the future. This section also lets you build your own Eeko creature which you can piece together using different animal parts and can provide some pretty entertaining combinations. This site also has parent and teacher links to those sections of their website, which can be very beneficial in helping parents communicate well with their children and help them in developing early math and reading skills. The only outside links are for TV schedules so children will know when they can watch their favorite PBS shows. I feel that this is a magnificent website for kids and would strongly recommend it to parents and teachers for educational use while keeping the children very entertained. Overall, I give this site an A grade because it does everything you can ask for in terms of providing children with useful and valuable information in a plethora of different areas while also entertaining them to keep them coming back for more.

Love it! Play on my free time
Fun site! I wish they had more videos. If I had more time, I would spend my whole day on this site. Safe, fun, and kid-friendly.
