What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Ohanarama is a family-centered social networking and gaming site. Users have the option of logging into the site using their Facebook account or by registering, which requires entering a first and last name, birth date, and email address. If the age you enter is less than 13, you're asked to submit a parent's email address. You can begin playing on the site immediately, but parents need to click on an activation link for you to challenge other family members to games and access all site features.

  • Kids can opt to donate their Neuro points to selected charities (for example, 1,000 equals a $10 donation to one charity).
  • Not applicable.
  • Not applicable.
  • Users can send each other pre-determined sayings like "OMG!"; kids can't enter (or receive) messages with profanity.
  • Kids get Neuros by playing games, which can be redeemed for real prizes from a variety of stores, so places like Target (500 Neuros earns a $5 gift card) and Barnes and Noble (1,000 Neuros for a $10 card) are showcased on the site.
  • Kids can only chat with registered family members on the site; the parent account holder needs to approve anyone connected to kids under age 13.

Is it any good?

OHANARAMA offers families a safe social networking- and game-playing option: Kids can friend other family members by sending them an email invitation through the site and can send them pre-written messages like "Love ya!"

Both kids and adults will find the dashboard easy to use. Although there aren't dozens of games on the site, the ones kids can play alone or with other family members are fun, and some help build memory and language skills. Plus, there's an incentive to try them: Playing games helps kids nab Neuro points, which can be redeemed for gift cards to stores like Target. (And the site gets points for encouraging philanthropy -- kids can also convert their Neuros into donations to several charities).

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why the site's social networking is super safe. Why would it be safer to only be able to talk to family members, and to only be able to use sayings someone else has picked for you to choose from?

  • What kinds of risks exist on a site where you can chat with anyone else who has registered -- whether you know them or not? What kinds of things should you be cautious of those people saying?

  • You can challenge family members to play games with you on the site. Find out how to get the most out of online games.

Ohanarama, hard to say, but fun to play! Kids & Adults Alike!
I think this is alot of fun and got the kids playing together and even challenging me! Its pretty use to use and understand, and the best part is they send you real rewards after you collect a certain amount of "nueros" from play educational and fun games. Play online together like checkers, chess, connect four. Also they have family contests. The only complaint I have is that I cant earn Nueros to give to them...they can only use them, which doesnt motivate me to play with or for them as much.(You can buy them but whats the point) They can earn small prizes within a day, like erasers or they can save up and earn a $10 gift card to Toys R US, Gamestop etc. They are very excited about that aspect.
