What parents need to know

Parents need to know that MYEPETS3D is safe, but it will frustrate kids accustomed to fully responsive virtual worlds. Animal avatars are supposed to be able to travel through this rich 3D environment. Navigation is difficult to figure out, though, so the little critters will be chasing their tales more than completing missions. Special features, like charms and "zips" look intriguing, but young users might have difficulty keeping track of all the imaginary details.

  • Although all of the characters are animals, there are some situations that don't seem to teach kids good safety rules. In the beginning of play for instance, a message might come up that says "go meet Larry the polar bear, he would like to talk to you," which sounds a bit suspicious. "Larry" then suggests you look around for "kash" that's hidden near a house. He says you can use it to "buy lots of cool stuff." Sounds a bit like a scenario parents would caution kids about in real life.
  • Special "powerpuff slippers" are said to increase a virtual animal's speed during battles.

  • Not applicable.
  • Although access to the online world doesn't require any purchases, there is a product page on the site that features all the real world plush pets available to buy. Acquiring stuff through purchases is a main activity on the site and is presented as an exciting pastime.
  • Users only need to supply a birth date and a parent's email address. Parents must set up an adult account before kids can access the site. However, there really isn't much for kids to get into, so monitoring activity would be a bit of overkill. Online interaction: There is no way to interact with other users. Players only get messages from within the game itself.

What kids can learn

1

Kids can learn role-playing in a safe, nonviolent virtual world. As a pet avatar, they gab with other pets and play games, venture on quests, or have battles while collecting rewards. Learning through play can set kids on an empowering course. Don't expect kids to gain longstanding life skills despite the site’s encouraging play.

What's it about?

Players start in Tree Town, where they can hang out and play games in the Game Hut or go on a quest. Playing games earns Kash, which means players can buy stuff for their pet. It's not clear what's available for purchase, though. If they choose a quest, they'll get instructions to talk to another pet or go someplace else where they might have to find an object or battle another pet. Players can use and earn zips, such as Boo Boo Bandages, to improve a pet's health. Charms, like the Smile Power Tee, can aid them in battle.

Is it any good?

Judged solely on visual appeal, MYEPETS3D is a homerun. The CGI graphics are realistic and impressive, although not exactly 3D in the way they jump off the page. The first-person point of view puts users in the center of the action (although this can mean staring at the butt of a dog for extended periods of time). But the main problem on this site is the lack of action. The simple act of moving a character from one place to another is an arduous task that takes an excruciatingly long time. Without detailed instructions, there's really no way to tell where to go and the site can be a struggle to figure out even for adult users. The animals on MyePets3D are cute and inviting, but looks aren't everything and it's a sure bet kids will lose patience with this site soon after logging on.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about basic safety for online worlds.

  • Families can talk about spending virtual cash in online worlds. It's OK to spend virtual cash anyway you'd like, but how should you approach real world money?

How kids will learn

MyePets3D takes several steps to provide kids a safe role-playing space. Pets' actions are computer generated and not controlled by other real-world players. Kids select fairly innocuous implements to use in battles that are refreshingly nonviolent. As kids continue to play, games and quests adapt. More items are added in so that kids must find longer words to guess.

How parents can help

  • Encourage kids to make up and describe their own virtual world with characters, quests, rules, and rewards.
  • Talk about social cues and compare how friendly and unfriendly characters in the game speak and act.
