Parents need to know that My Model is a fashion site that lets girls dress up a female model that they can shape according to their own body type and look, then "try on" clothes and even purchase some of those clothes from partner sites. There's also fashion and teen celeb gossip news (a lot of Bieber talk here) because this site was created by the publisher of J-14 magazine and other similar tween and teen media.
MY MODEL is not an intentional self-esteem or body acceptance-promoting site. But it's still impressive to see a commercial site give tween and teen girls the chance to create somewhat diverse, true-to-life models of themselves no matter what their shape or look, even if it is just to sell clothes. Some of the fashion advice here seems a little out of step with the target audience (there's a video featuring two- or three-inch high heels for "spring footwear," for example). But most of the clothing featured here is likely to be both girl- and mom-approved by most mainstream standards.
Families can talk about how stereotypes of girls and "perfect bodies" are often promoted in the fashion world. What really makes a "perfect body"? Is it one size only? Or is it about good health and being active?
