Is it any good?

Greg Nussbaum is a fourth grade teacher in Virginia who began a small classroom site to assist his own students. The site has grown to a formidable online educational presence and is visited more than 5 million times per month. Full of custom interactive games and activities, MrNussbaum was developed based on the idea that crucial concepts, themes, ideas, and fact sets taught in the classroom can be enhanced over the Internet through interactivity. It’s widely used by K-8 teachers in computer labs and classrooms and provides a safe clearinghouse for elementary-level educational games. The games are not chock full of high-end graphics, but they are smartly crafted, interesting interactive tools that kids can access at home for fun or practice. With more than 60 separate games and a variety of interesting applications (such as Draggable Math) and activities, there’s something to supplement whatever students are studying.

What families can talk about

  • How to find reliable information on the Internet. What are some safe places to browse? How can you tell which sites you can trust?

  • Why it’s important to find age-appropriate information through a trusted site rather than through a wider Google search. What are the benefits of going to a single site like Mr. Nussbaum’s that offer options and learning opportunities?

  • Why it’s important to practice skills you’ve learned in school. How does time spent on interactive learning games help supplement and reinforce traditional schoolwork? How does it make learning more interesting? Are there ways that media and time spent on computers can help your progress in school? Hinder it?
