What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this non-commercial website for preschoolers features live-action videos that focus on nursery rhymes and their power to promote early literacy. A cast of kid-friendly costumed characters pulled from Mother Goose rhymes present a series of 1-minute educational programs that invite preschoolers to sing and dance along to favorite nursery rhymes. There’s no reading necessary, and with parental assistance (we don't recommend preschoolers spend time online without parents), preschoolers can watch the videos, listen to the rhymes or follow along to the words. There is also a selection of printables related to the rhymes that can be printed and colored.

  • There are no ads and no products promoted, but these original PBS programs will eventually be released on DVD, and there’s a strong possibility they will be promoted and available for sale via this site.

Is it any good?

Mother Goose Club is an off-shoot of a television show produced locally in Nashville, TN, by a mother who is also an educator and a former television producer. For a time, the program aired on Nashville Public Television and is slated to be released on DVD in the near future. The sole focus of the site is to present nursery rhymes to preschoolers in a way that’s engaging and energetic so they will want to sing, clap, do finger plays, and repeat the rhymes. These actions will help them develop a feel for the sounds and structures of language. As the colorful, energetic characters introduce the Mother Goose rhymes in brief, entertaining skits, children are introduced to characters, drama, simple story structure and a host of new vocabulary words, all building blocks for early literacy. For young kids (and parents who may need a nursery rhyme refresher) this is a pleasant, safe place to stop in and play for a while.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the importance of limiting computer time so kids of all ages have time for other important off-line activities.

  • Families can talk about the different ways of learning and how music and rhyme can help with learning. What helps you learn? Do you remember more when you have an activity to do? Or when you watch a video or sing along?

  • Why it’s important to maintain a healthy balance when it comes to online entertainment -- even when you’re spending time with positive media such as educational television programs and online learning games.

Introducing nursery rhymes to my children.
Love all the characters. Very catchy songs, lyrics that my son enjoyed. Enjoyed introducing nursery rhymes to my son that I learned as a child. We want more.
