What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site is a portal to a large collection of games, puzzles, and illusions. Visitors won’t find any fancy graphics or colorful home page here, just links to a wide variety of visual brain teasers, optical illusions, and puzzles. Users will also find many, many ads. No matter where you end up on the site, there are at least two display ads and a host of sponsored links -- all of which direct you off the site and into new websites. It’s traveling into these other websites that can lead users to less safe territory. Clicking a sponsored link can lead to sites that offer more games for the brain or products that purport to help build brain power (herbal supplements and hormone-enhancing programs, for instance). It can also lead to sites that have more questionable ad content and links.

  • With abundant ads, there are outside links accessible on every page and the sponsors change with every click, making it likely that some questionable links such as DateaCougar.com will eventually be visible.

  • There’s no escaping the ads on this website -- they’re everywhere. Banner ads and Google-sponsored links are on every page of the site and are visible even when users are playing their selected game or viewing an optical illusion. Ad sponsors range from other puzzle-related websites to weight loss programs, wrinkle removers, and dating sites.

Is it any good?

There’s a multitude of fascinating and fun mental activities and puzzles to be discovered at MindBluff. All of these games for the brain are family friendly and interesting to check out alone or with a group, and they range from classics such as the Escher staircase and the old/young woman illustration to fascinating experiments for the brain (i.e. read a paragraph that will cause a spike in your ability to feel empathy!) and interesting anagrams and mental riddles. Kids who like to challenge themselves and solve puzzles will find some stimulating fare here. There are no bells and whistles, just a plain and simple site surrounded by a lot of ads and sponsored links.

What families can talk about

  • How there is often more than one way to look at things. How do puzzles, brain teasers and optical illusions help the brain learn to think through questions differently?

  • Why it’s important to limit how much time is spent in front of a computer screen, even when you’re looking at interesting word puzzles or math games.

  • The importance of being cautious about where you click and where you go when you’re online. Even if you’re on a website that is safe and fun, there are still some safety tips you should keep in mind.
