What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this creative writing site for teens doesn’t constantly monitor or review message board posts before they go live. The stories, poems, and other writing that users post also aren’t monitored. Users are encouraged to report any inappropriate content by using “report abuse” links that appear throughout the site.

  • Users are encouraged to only post positive, constructive comments about the poems, short stories, essays, and novels -- and most do.
  • The site’s user-submitted content includes items about dying after getting hit by a train, cutting, and other topics not suitable for younger readers.
  • The site’s love-based stories focus more on crushes and break-ups -- although stories with sexual content could, in theory, end up on the site.
  • Poems and stories contain words like f--ed and b--ch.
  • The site is sponsored by a book publisher and features banner ads for some of its teen-focused books.
  • You're asked to submit a username, password, birthdate, email address and security question to register.

Is it any good?

The INKPOP community was created by HarperCollins to give teens a forum to publish books, short stories, essays and poetry. HarperCollins editors also review the top ranked stories each month as part of an ongoing search that could land an Inkpop writer a publishing contract.

Inkpop lets young writers showcase their work and fine-tune it using feedback from registered site users. Authors can keep their work private until they’re ready to share it. However, the site would benefit from a few more control measures. Thanks to Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter links on each poem, story, and essay page, anyone can easily post a link on a variety of social networking sites inviting people to view an Inkpop piece. Also, the written pieces that users submit and message board comments aren't monitored -- which means language and content that's too adult for the 13-and-older Inkpop crowd could be posted.

Online interaction: Teens post content and comments using a username. There's a chance someone can harshly criticize a story or poem you post, but many of the comments are encouraging.

What families can talk about

  • Why could posting a link to a social networking site like Facebook that encourages people to view something you wrote and posted on another site possibly not be a good idea? Can you be sure that only your friends will see something that you post on Facebook or Twitter?

  • What is the difference between constructive criticism and just
criticizing somebody? How can you offer advice or tell someone what you
think without hurting that person’s feelings?

  • What kind of things are OK to post about a story or poem you read online? What kind of things are not OK to say or post?

The View From A Kid
Recently, there has been a flood of what the original users are calling "trolls". These "trolls" are merely users who choose to abuse inkpop and it's role in a teen's life. Personally, I haven't seen any of these trolls, and the inkpop moderators and users are working hard to banish them from the site. Also, inkpop is a wonderful site. Teens are encouraged, as the review says, to expand their imagination and vocabulary. Overall, this site is something I would take into consideration when my child has a talent for writing.

Very good website for people who want to get their work out there!
Inkpop is a great community for young writers. You can publish your own work (and it's protected by the feature that takes away the ability to right click, without this feature one's work could be easily stolen by others), read other people's stories. Granted, some of the stories can be a little bit inappropriate (although many are not), like the other day I just read one where drugs played a big role, but I wouldn't be too overly concerned about anything on this site. So, anyway, this website is definitely worth checking out! (By the way, if you're looking for a good read, please don't hesitate to check out my own book, The Recycling Brat! You can find it on the site.)

Amazing community that gives teens an outlet to share work, and have a real chance at a publishing contract!
Inkpop is an amazing site for young writers who like to create poems, short stories, essays, or even novels, whether they just want to have fun and be heard, or actually earn a chance of landing a publishing contract! Naturally, I'm a total blabbermouth, and I love to read and write, and was actually a member of Inkpop in it's early-early days when you had to be invited, follow a link, then create your profile as a beta user. Most of the content is very high quality and entertaining, and even though the stories COULD contain things that could be inapproprite, I haven't seen anything on there that I would see in most YA lit. A major pro is that the site has an easy-to-use format, and plays a major role in protecting work by eliminating the "copy" button, and actually gives teen writers a place to be taken seriously and have a chance at landing a contract! Unfortunetly, I have an inability to actually write a whole story, even though I have great ideas for them!

I don't have an account (yet!) because obiously I'm too young, because it says for 13 and up, but I might ask my mom and she might say yes (or a relay hope so), I am writing a book! In real life called: The mysterious girl, also I hear young writers society is less complicated than inkpop.

Inkpop
I love inkpop*. If you want to become a writer, this is a site where you can post stories, books, poems, essays, and have someone critique it. It teaches you how to become a better writer and how you can make someone else better. I have an account on inkpop, and there are so many diverse people there that you can befriend and the different types of media is wonderful. However, I advise for you not to post personal messages, for other people can read them.

Gaining A Creative Edge
Inkpop's a great way for a young writer to grow and expand their skills. During my personal experience, I learned so many tips and tricks of writing successfully and building a good story, as well as author jargon. Also, by reading projects created by others' your age, you can gain inspiration as well for your own work. It was great to meet and mingle with creative, innovative, and intelligent students - but on the subject of mingling, take it with a grain of salt. I recommend younger kids (eleven or younger) to stay of the "random chat" threads in the forums. Many inkpop users are in high school, college, or professionals, and many chat conversations may be more suitable for an audience in that age bracket. Otherwise, inkpop is a pretty safe site - just make sure you protect your intellectual property!
