What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this free social networking website is aimed at teen girls, but offers limited privacy, no moderation, and no parental controls. There’s a strong focus on beauty, fashion, and celebrity, but not much substance to keep teens interested other than some short posts that plug products and retailers along with a smattering of photos of popular celebrities and current celebrity “crushes.” The social network function encourages participation but currently isn’t very active. A dedicated Advice area gives users access to so-called specialists who can privately (via email) answer teens’ questions about health, skin care, nutrition, education, modeling, and more.

  • There’s a slight sense of encouragement and support that stems from the Advice section, where a variety of "specialists" are available to answer questions (via private email) on everything from gynecology topics to breaking into modeling and acting.
  • Not applicable.
  • With unmoderated live chat and message boards, there’s ample opportunity for inappropriate posts. Fashion- and beauty-related images of models and celebrities are often in suggestive clothing and poses.
  • Unmoderated live chats and network messaging leave open the opportunity for inappropriate language.
  • Third-party ads are interspersed throughout the site, some touting opportunities for girls to be “discovered” for a modeling or acting career. Yet others are innocuous and promote organizations such as The Humane Society. Branded Frenzy products (shorts, earrings, flip flops) are available for sale in the Shop section and are promoted everywhere on the site.
  • Users can create profiles, and only a username and password is needed to register. Settings are available to limit who sees their profile, friends, or photos, and who is able to send a user messages. There are no parental controls available.

Is it any good?

With so many social networking sites clamoring for girls’ time and attention, any new site needs a hook to draw them in and keep them coming back. But instead of finding that one key thing that girls will be drawn to and then executing it well, IMFRENZY has tried to throw everything into the mix. The result is a social network site that tries to offer a little of everything -- yet none of it is done particularly well. And none of it is particularly safe for its teen users. Users will find fluffy celebrity news, gossip, and photos as well as some seriously lame online games. There are brief blogs that tout fashion favorites and push product (such as clothes from H&M and makeup from Essie). Teens can also seek out confidential, emailed advice from “experts” in a wide array of topics, but offering up an email address and a personal question to an adult stranger seems risky.

good resource for teen girls
i love that girls have an outlet to ask doctors and nutritionists questions. you know girls these days are concerned about body image so I think its a good idea that they can speak to a nutritionist and ask questions about a healthy diet. i also like how girls can blog and help each other out on everyday issues by commenting on each others blogs on topics related to school, boyfriends, and friends. good site! all my daughters friends are on it.

Teen Fun and Resources
This site is amazing. It gives teen/tween girls their own place on the web for advice, celeb info, blogs, games, contests, etc! I've been looking for sites like this for a long time...and no there's another one to add to the list! =) It's a girl's world!
