What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Imbee, a Facebook-like social networking site for kids age 8-14, is a safer choice -- as long as the parent or teacher who approves the child's membership uses the many parental control options and monitors the child's activity on the site frequently. For paid "premium" members, there's also a profanity-free music service called imbee radio, as the site attempts to become the Facebook and Pandora alternative for the tween and younger teen set.

  • Parents should be one of your friends on social networking sites. Whatever you post should be parent-viewing appropriate. While getting to know how to use the tools on a social network sites is important and can be fun, it's also important to know who you're chatting with, what information you're giving out on the Internet about yourself, and to have safeguards in place.
  • The site's Games Room links to offsite to Miniclip.com. A few games like Commando Assault are shoot-em-up games. But the graphics are definitely video game quality, not ultra-realistic like some of the latest violent video games.
  • Some of the pop songs on imbee radio, while cleaner than most, still have the sexual overtones typical of many mainstream Top 40 pop, R & B, and country songs.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some tie-ins to other media like new movie releases, as well as fan clubs for celebrities and brands. There's a "premium" membership that costs $3.99 for the first six months, $4.99 every month thereafter, or $49.95 per year, which includes music downloads, imbee radio, playlists, ringtones, and music videos.
  • None observed. See note on safety.
  • The site indicates that it complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. There are many parental control options and parents have access to everything a child posts or receives, but the parent or teacher who approves the membership must check the child's activity frequently. If a child member is interacting with an adult member, a red box is signaled around the adult's content. The privacy policy states that "all content created is considered personal information," including photos, blog entries, and chat logs.

Is it any good?

For kids age 8-14 who like pop culture news, current music, and want to try a Facebook-like account of their own, IMBEE is a safe place to enter into the worlds of social networking and legal use of online music. There's a promising pitch here for a No Bully Zone "Think Before You Send" campaign, as well as good tutorials and Internet safety information for parents (who can connect with the site through their Facebook page) and kids. The more active users this site attracts, the more groups and fan sites will form, which will also boost the overall experience. Kids on the younger side of the 8-14 spectrum may find that the site is not directed enough for them.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about kids' safety and behavior on social networking sites. If imbee is your child's first foray into social networking, read Common Sense Media's Parent Advice Tipsheet on Social Networking.

  • Talk about "friending" people on a social networking site. How does your child feel about having a parent or teacher as an online friend? How would you, the parent, feel if your child was a friend of yours on Facebook?

Imbee is a creative, great, and secure site for my child. I have an eleven year old, and he loves Imbee. It has games, he is able to network with his friends, entertainment and sports news – and everything is appropriate for his age. I feel that my son is protected on this site. I can trust the site 100%. I recommend this site over the other’s that our out there. With all the research I have done, Imbee is the only site that is the right fit for my son. I encourage everyone that has a child in the ‘tween’ stage to check out Imbee and sign up. Being a parent it is nice to observe what my son likes. I have ‘parental controls’, however, the site is so amazing; I don’t have to put strict limitations on him. He is able to look at an assortment of media and really develop as an individual. Please check it out… I highly encourage this site, and hope to see it grow!
