What parents need to know

Parents need to know that HARRY POTTER SCHOLASTIC is the publisher's official Grand Central Station for information about the seven Harry Potter titles. Along with book synopses, there are glossaries, guides, games, and more about each book. as well as interesting bios about J.K. Rowling and the series' illustrator. Even the most devoted Harry Potter fan will most likely learn something new about these beloved books from this site.

  • The video montage of kids talking about their love of Harry Potter books, how many times they've read each and how long it's taken them to read an individual book (some in as little as one day) is inspiring and hopeful for the future of reading in our screen-heavy culture.
  • Book summaries include descriptions of violence on par with the Harry Potter books (check out Common Sense Media's All Things Harry Potter for more information on individual books).
  • Not applicable.
  • Not applicable.
  • This is definitely a promotional site for Scholastic's Harry Potter series, but there are no other direct ads for HP movies, games, amusement parks, etc.  There are banner ads promoting The Stacks, Scholastic's main site for kids.

Is it any good?

This site is a rock-solid source of Harry Potter information, and includes some fun games and features, too. If your child is looking to interact with other HP fans, however, they'll have to head over to The Stacks, Scholastic's official site for kids to interact on subjects of favorite titles and authors. There are some glitches with some of the HP site's features, and some of the visuals may be a bit scary or confusing for young, non-reading Harry Potter listeners. But, overall, this is a site where most Potter fans will find a lot to learn and much to love.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about encouraging reading. If your kids read only Harry Potter, try some of these Common Sense Media tips for How to Get Your Kids Reading to ensure that their love of books keeps growing.

  • Read the bios of Harry Potter's author and illustrator with your child to help them understand that "real people" really do write and draw these books, but that it takes a lot of education, hard work, luck, and perseverence to create an uber-popular series like the Harry Potter series.
