What parents need to know

Parents need to know that tween and teen girls (especially those who are not already familiar with the message of the Girls Inc. non-profit organization) will likely find the overall message of Girls Inc. Online refreshing and empowering. The videos will provide inspiration for girls who want to dream big dreams and work toward them. That said, many girls who already use other social networking and blogging sites may find the pre-scripted goal-setting tool and the limited user-to-user communication rather stifling, causing their stay on the site not to last long. That's too bad, because there's a lot to learn here.

  • Not applicable.
  • Girls create a first-name-only avatar to represent them on the site.  Email address and birthdate are required at time of registration. No photos or shared information. It is not necessary to register to watch videos on the site. Girls under 13 must have parental permission to register. Parents are provided with clear information on how to cancel their child's membership at any time.

Is it any good?

GIRLS INC. ONLINE is a supportive site with video testimonials of women
sharing inspiring personal success stories. Tween and teen girls
can watch the videos, set their own goals here, and be involved in a
community that empowers girls to "envision their futures without
limits."  This site is the online companion of
the well-established non-profit organization Girls Inc., which
runs after-school and summer programs just for girls.

Girls can find solid information, inspiration, a "Girls' Bill of Rights," and more here. The videos about life goals and career choices are excellent for the older tween or teen audience, but some younger girls may find them too detailed and long to keep their attention. The one main shortfall of this overall excellent site is a lack of personal input and social interaction. The pre-scripted-only goal-setting and the minimal opportunity to interact with other girls about what they're doing makes the site extremely safe, but also limits options. Some girls may find this restrictive and a little boring.

Online interaction: No message boards or internal messages. Pre-scripted messages only.

Saftey Features Detract from Sites Potential...
Maybe I'm too old for girly websites or something. This is probably the lamest thing I've seen in a long long time. Basically, you sign on. You make "goals" for yourself, but you have to choose from the available options. So say i wanted to make "write a book" a goal. It's not an option....so I can't. Also, there's no forum on this website. Yeah, you can make an avatar for yourself, using the available suggestions, of course, and you can select a description for yourself. Again, from the available suggestions. I know this is designed to keep user's safe, but I want to be able to write my own profile. This feature really detracts from the sites potential. It also adds a bunch of numbers onto your name, creating a "user" name for you. poop. Also, there's no way to communicate with other users. what's the point of having a profile if you can't even "friend" a person? you could easily watch the sites "motivational videos" without signing up. In my opinion, this is a big honking waste of time. Don't waste your life on it.

A site for younger girls.
This site is pretty boring. You can create goals but you're limited to what you can choose. Lets say you want to improve your dancing. Well, you can "be" a dancer but there is no option for "improving" or becoming better. I think its a cute idea, a site for girls to share their goals and their progress but its very unappealing to teens. This site is probably aimed at girls ages 7-10 or younger.
