What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this new fan site for the popular book series star and budding television character Geronimo Stilton already has quite a few fun features to explore, but there's more to come. Currently in Beta version, there are games to play, some portions of books to read, a video trailer for the television series, and some writing and art activities. But some other features -- such as an e-book, app, blog, and more -- aren't yet active.

  • Be adventuresome through reading, writing, and using critical-thinking skills. Geronimo and his friends are all likable characters with generally positive outlooks on life.

  • The new Geronimo television cartoon is promoted here with a short video as well as the show's theme song. There's a "buy" tab on the books section here that moves kids from the Geronimo website to the publisher's home page. Kids can put desired books on their wish list or send a book recommendation to a friend's email account.
  • To register, kids have to insert their first and last name, gender, parent email, and their own email; they also create a "nickname" (username) on the registration page. The privacy policy is a little different here because it is not a U.S.-created website, so there's nothing about adherence to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The policy here states that collected data may be used for "statistical and marketing activities." Parents need to approve their child's registration on this site with a link sent to their email.

Is it any good?

Geronimo Stilton fans will find lots of reasons to look around and hang out on this colorful site. The games are fun and lightly educational, the other features are at least worth a glance to see what's already there and what's coming up, and the book synopses will keep new fans busy finding and organizing their upcoming adventures. For those new to the world of Geronimo and friends, especially parents, the lengthy explainer of who he is and what general themes his books try to include (and intentionally leave out) is definitely worth the read.

Online interaction: Kids can only interact with kids whose "nicknames" (usernames) they already know. There's no way to exchange private messages on the site; messages are sent through email addresses entered on the site to send recommendations.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why the adventures of Geronimo and friends are fun to read about. What does your child like about this book series? Does your child think the cartoon show will be as good as the books? Why or why not? Get some reading discussion tips to spark more questions.

  • One of the features here gives kids the opportunity to write an article for the "Rodent Gazette" and upload a photo that may be published on the site's blog. Discuss some topics your child might want to write about, as well as your family's rules for posting photos on websites.

Great.
Uh, um it's great, however, the main charactor falls in love with other girls.
