What parents need to know

Parents need to know that GenerationOn encourages young people to get involved in their communities. It has separate sections for kids and teens (as well as parents, teachers, and organizations) but none of the teen content is "iffy" for younger kids. Currently, there's no interactive content, so parents can rest assured that the site is safe.

  • The site makes volunteering seem fun and accessible, sending the message that there are plenty of things that kids can do to help people and make the world a better place.

  • No ads; a few sponsor logos. One of the "media partners" links will take you to a commercial site.
  • Teens and adults can sign up by providing their first name, email address, and birth date. This information isn't displayed to other users. The site does not offer registration to kids under 13. There are links to connect with GenerationOn on Facebook and Twitter for kids over 13.

Is it any good?

A project of the Points of Light Institute, a nonprofit organization that encourages volunteerism, GENERATIONON provides kids and teens with creative ideas for helping causes in their communities. The site's suggestions range from simple things that kids can do on their own -- like reminding others to turn off the lights -- to more elaborate projects for groups or families, like cleaning up a local park. Teachers will also find appealing ideas for integrating community service into their curricula. Teens and adults can sign up to be members, but there doesn't seem to be an opportunity to post content or connect with other users; since the site was launched recently, interactive features may still be in the works.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what causes are most important to them and what they've done to help. What are different ways that people can support a cause? Which activities on this site are the most appealing?

  • Families can also talk about the media partner links. What are some reasons big corporations would be involved in a site like this? What happens when you click on their links from the home page?

Good for teaching your kids to help out in the community kinda misleading about a few things though.
It is definately good for helping your kids get ideas for helping in the community. However, I was kinda sad that it was misleading in that it has a part that says games on it yet there is no actual games or links when you hit it a community map pops up with no links.
