Parents need to know that this educational game site for kids ages 4 to 12 categorizes games by age and subject matter -- math, ABCs, geography, creative play, and science. Created by a company in the Netherlands, some of the content doesn't match up with American spelling or educational development patterns. The creators say the site is particularly geared toward use in classrooms with interactive whiteboards, which can be followed up at home by kids who can play it with a mouse and keyboard, or touchscreen such as the iPad.
CYBERKIDZGAMES needs a lot of work. The graphics are colorful, and some of the games and printables are both engaging and educational. But the numerous spelling errors (and outright change from English to Dutch mid-game, in some instances), are an unfortunate distraction. That, coupled with the mismatched level of difficultly in some games and age categories and the many ads that aren't clearly marked as such, makes the current version of this potentially promising site a likely frustrating experience for many kids.
Families can talk about why it's important to identify ads on a website and why your child doesn't have to (or shouldn't necessarily want to) "Click on the Red Button!" on every blinking image on a screen that they may see. Help your kids understand advertising with Common Sense Media's Parent Advice Tips.
Talk to your kids about why some games might be labeled for their age but are really not for them. For example, just because you're 11 doesn't mean you should know everything that someone who creates a game tells you is age appropriate.
