Parents need to know that this adorable storytime website features a variety of animated cartoons and audio stories for the toddler set. Designed to showcase vintage bedtime stories from around the world, this sweetly simple site lets users watch and listen to stories that are appropriate for their particular time zone and needs. Choose "day" and get a lively tale or select "night" for a tempered, calming bedtime story. Several simple activities, a gallery of children’s art, and a blog round out the site.
You may question whether any preschooler really needs a Web-based television station, but the creator of BunnyEars.tv established the site in order to recapture some of the warm, fuzzy feelings she experienced as a young child growing up in Hungary. (She also was looking for something -- anything! -- to help lull her own child to sleep.) Back then, children’s cartoons were shown only at bedtime and nearly all Hungarian children with a TV watched a cartoon just before bedtime. The site features a collection of charming, decades-old children’s series from around the world with silly, kid-friendly titles like Chapi Chapo and Bagpuss. New episodes of the animated series are added each week. The site itself has a soothing, earthy feel to it, and users can select from quaint animated videos or audio stories and even some gentle folk songs from Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and others.
Why storytime with a parent is soothing for young kids. How does keeping a nightly routine before bedtime help prepare kids physically and mentally for sleep? Whether videos or other media are appropriate ways to close out a young child’s day.
Different ways stories can be told. What types of stories do you hear, see or play in your life? How do stories you see or hear help your own imagination? Do preschoolers need television, computers or other media to stimulate their imaginations?
How it can be fun to watch video bedtime stories, but it’s also important to get stories from different places like books and family members. Why is it important to limit how much screen time (computer, television or otherwise) young children have each day?
