What parents need to know

Parents need to know that AngelinaBallerina.com is a fun and entertaining yet advertising-heavy site based on the book series by Katharine Holabird, as well as the television series that can be viewed on PBS Kids. Kids can play interactive games and learn about different styles of dance on the site; they can also use a webcam to watch themselves on the computer screen, as if they were performing on the big stage. Registered members gain access to their own personalized dressing room where they can sit before a magic mirror -- a reflection of the user's face, which can be changed into a variety of funny faces. A profile description is attached to the mirror with the member's favorite color and book, and names of their hometown, pet, and best friend. In the "Dance Studio," Angelina teaches kids pirouettes and tutu turns. She also offers a sing-along section with inspirational lyrics.

  • The site is filled with advertisements and links encouraging kids to buy toys, CDs, DVDs, apps, and fast food. Also, advertisement pop-ups get in the way of the site's videos and interactive games, taking away from the experience.
  • Users younger than 13 can only register if they include a parent's email. The site then alerts the parent that their child has registered to use the site. Personal information may be collected from users that are over 13, and is used for internal marketing and to enhance users' experience on the site. The site may share personal information with third parties to offer additional service opportunities. The site includes many external links; privacy on the external sites will vary.

Is it any good?

ANGELINA BALLERINA is an engaging site that offers an introduction to the many intriguing Angelina Ballerina characters, which can be a great way to encourage kids to read the series. The site includes coloring pages, bookmarks, and photo frames, along with fun games that are easy to play. Not only will kids be interested in the stationary activities, but they will also enjoy moving to the music. By following Angelina's instructions they can learn different styles of dance and how to improve their techniques. Plus, the parent page has some good tips for moms and dads of dancers.

Unfortunately the site falls short with too many advertisements pushing kids to buy merchandise. Also, the construction of the site is a bit skewed; border ads hinder the view of the movie screen, interfering with some of the most fun activities offered.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about different styles of dancing and techniques. List some of your favorite types of dance and discuss different ways to stay active.

  • Families can also discuss the importance of practicing extracurricular activities and staying active. How does someone become a professional dancer or athlete?
