Parents need to know that this reality series features young people revealing their romantic feelings for a best friend. It's pretty tame for teens, but it does include occasional bleeped profanity ("f--k") and some hugging and kissing.
FRIENDZONE follows folks mustering up the courage to tell their best friends that they want to go from being their BFF to being their boyfriend or girlfriend. Each episode features two people who've had a long-time friendship with someone they secretly have a crush on. The person asks her/his best friend to help them get ready for a blind date, only to reveal that the date is actually intended for the two of them. Some friends are willing to take their relationship a step further, but others are faced with the difficult task of turning the offer down.
This teen-oriented series underscores the awkwardness that comes from trying to transition from being someone's friend to being their romantic partner. It highlights some of the positive outcomes that can result from taking that chance, but it also shows how a friendship can potentially fall apart from the attempt.
It isn't easy to watch these young people nervously profess their real feelings to their friends -- or react when their feelings aren't reciprocated. But there's also an honesty that comes with these moments that makes the overall show compelling. No doubt many viewers will be able to identify with some of the experiences featured here.
Families can talk about relationships. Is it worth risking a friendship with someone to try to become their boyfriend or girlfriend? If so, when do you know that it's time to take that risk?
Why do you think the people on this reality show have chosen to take this risk in their relationship in front of a camera? What do they stand to gain or lose?
