What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this talk show examines a wide variety of health, relationship, beauty, and lifestyle problems with the intent of showing how they can be solved. Discussions about violent and/or sexual behavior and other mature issues are pretty sanitized and offered within the context of educating and helping people. Some segments discuss celebrity drug addiction. Contributor books and services, as well as the show's website, are promoted throughout the show.

  • The series is designed to discuss people's problems and then take active steps to fix them, with the help of information, experts, and other resources.
  • Dr. Drew offers advice and assistance and provides people with expert help for a variety of problems. He's also a huge self promoter.

  • Issues about road rage and other violent behavior are discussed, as well as why these actions are inappropriate and ways to change them.
  • Affairs, prostitution, porn addiction, and other issues are occasional show themes. Several show contributors are matchmakers and relationship experts.
  • Not applicable.
  • The show's website, LCTV.com, is promoted heavily. Videos offering advice and other info are available on the website. Product plugs include Maria Menounos' book, The Everygirl's Guide to Life and Colorscience makeup.
  • Drug use/addiction is discussed and regarded as negative behavior.

What's the story?

DR. DREW'S LIFECHANGERS is a daytime talk show in which host Drew Pinsky helps regular folks (and the occasional celeb) find ways to improve their lives. From adults suffering from severe acne to angry drivers who need help controlling their road rage, Dr. Drew heps his subjects by bringing in medical experts and other folks who can specifically help them with their health, beauty, relationship, and lifestyle problems. Contributors to the show, including TV personalities like Maria Menounos, also appear regularly to offer tips and advice.

Is it any good?

The show takes a positive and proactive look at day-to-day problems, as well as medical conditions and other more serious issues. But the amount of time spent on these things is very limited given the show's 30-minute slot. Like any talk show, the discussions about (and solutions to) these things are mostly superficial.

Dr. Drew fans will definitely like his trademark frank-but-gentle approach as he talks to his guests. But some of his jokes and interaction with show contributors seem rehearsed and unnatural. This aside, he offers positive messages about getting informed and improving your life in a variety of ways.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about talk shows. Is discussing problems publicly on a talk show the best way to find help? Are there issues that you consider inappropriate for discussing in this forum?

  • How does this show serve as a promotional vehicle for products and services? Is Dr. Drew a celebrity? A role model? What does he gain by doing a show like this?
