What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Wasting Light is a super-clean rock album, containing no graphic lyrics about sex or substances, one semi-aggressive metaphor comparing emotional ties to a "noose," a few references to (non-violently) passing away, and just one instance of the word "s--t." While these lyrics can get real at times (for example, "One of these days I bet your heart'll be broken, I bet your pride'll be stolen"), and the somewhat obscure lyrics will go above the heads of younger kids, this record is still an overall great choice for younger fans of good rock and roll.

  • Some positive messages about "learning to walk again" after going through hard times in life.
  • Songs encourage listeners to get back up after they've fallen down and endured rough patches.
  • The song "These Days" deals with dying ("One of these days your heart will stop and play its final beat"), and one metaphor about how having an emotional hold on someone is like putting them in a "noose."
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

WASTING LIGHT is the Grammy-nominated eighth record from one of the world's biggest rock bands of the moment: the Foo Fighters. Like most alt-rock records, this one includes some indirect, puzzle-like messages about life's ups and downs, but none are especially dark or depressing.

Is it any good?

Foo Fighter frontman Dave Grohl may have had his start in one of the most well-known alternative bands of all time -- Nirvana -- but he's grown to produce many a mass-appeal rock song with his current group. Grohl has a gift for writing lyrics and music that are at once simple and powerful, a talent that comes through loud and clear with these tracks. Particular highlights include the hard-driving kick-off track, "Bridge Burning," and "Dear Rosemary," featuring Bob Mould, leader of the legendary punk band Husker Du.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why the Foo Fighters have become one of the biggest bands in the world. What are some of things that make the Foo Fighters so popular?

  • The band is known for its cleaner lyrics and super-catchy hooks. What's more important in a song -- the lyrics or the music? Why?
