What parents need to know

Parents need to know that The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 soundtrack is a lot like the soundtracks for previous Twilight films, full of emotional but largely clean songs by mostly indie rock artists. Though the tunes don't have mature content like profanity, graphic sexual descriptions, or hardcore references to substance use and violence, they include a few lines about kissing, death, religion, and hurting yourself ("I drove a nail into my shoe") to forget emotional anguish. They also include lyrics that discuss the basis of Bella and Edward's relationship -- that Bella must change who she is in order to be with Edward.

  • Not a lot of overly positive or negative lyrics, though there are a few troubling lines about changing who you are to accommodate someone else.
  • Whether or not you think Bella and Edward are good role models depends on your perspective.
  • A couple of lines about death and hurting yourself to dull emotional pain.
  • A handful of kissing references.

What's the story?

The fourth installment in the epic Twilight series, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 has its own soundtrack, following the pattern of previous Twilight flicks. Like the soundtracks that have come before, this one features lots of indie-rock songs that are fraught with emotion.

Is it any good?

With the spreading appeal of the Twilight story, it's no surprise that a few more mainstream artists (Bruno Mars, Christina Perri) would be showing up in the newer Twilight soundtracks. That said, the core indie-rock songs remain the real gems, with stand-out tracks from The Joy Formidable, The Belle Brigade, Imperial Mammoth, and more.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the soundtrack's mood. How does it match the tone of the book and movie?

  • Why do you think the artists featured on the soundtrack were chosen? What do you think of the inclusion of more pop-based singers, such as Bruno Mars?

  • Would you buy this soundtrack if you weren't a fan of the book or movie? Does listening to it make you want to see the movie?

A Thousand Years
A Thousand Years by Christina Perri is by far the best song on this soundtrack. I'm not a Bruno Mars fan, so I think it ruins this soundtrack. The movies and books may suck, but the music is great.

Okay for kids, good as an album.
The Twilight Saga movies may not be the best, but the music is great. There aren't many positive messages, but I find "Neighbors" inspiring. Music-wise, some of the songs (like "Turning Page" and "Sister Rosetta") are good, and some of the songs (like "A Thousand Years" and "It Will Rain") are just weak. This soundtrack is pretty different compared to the other ones, with a little more pop and a little more fun, but it's still great.

It's ok...
Honestly, the content of the songs are fine, and there are no harmful messages that kids will pick up. This album was good for the first few listens, and then it got boring - this is definitely not the best Twilight Saga soundtrack. Let's hope that the part 2 CD is better!
