What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this single is all about having a good time through partying and dancing, but the lyrics steer clear of any mention of alcohol or drugs. There's a reference to a mysterious tattoo that looks like actor Zach Galifianakis. The video shows a couple kissing rather passionately for a few seconds, but other than that it's fine for older kids.

  • Positive overall message about having a good time no matter what kind of day you've had. The song is about dancing and partying but leaves out drinking, drugs, or sex.
  • You can party like it's your birthday, even when it's not -- and without drinking or drugs.
  • Not applicable.
  • Talks about girlfriend "cheating," and the video shows a couple making out on a printer.

What's the story?

"TONIGHT TONIGHT" is a single from Nashville band Hot Chelle Rae, (formerly known as Miracle Drug), who apparently got their name from a very enthusiastic MySpace fan. It's an infectious pop-rock tune about having fun and partying the night away after a rough week or bad day. Although the emphasis is on having a good time, there's no mention of drugs or alcohol, making it fine for the middle school crowd.

Is it any good?

"Tonight Tonight" catches your attention from the start with lyrics that talk about a bad week and a cheating girlfriend, then the sarcastic, "la, la, la, whatever, la, la, la, it doesn't matter." Everyone can relate to a bad day and the bliss that comes after when you can let loose with your friends on the weekend. Hot Chelle Rae makes you want to dance like it's your birthday, even if it isn't, and not care who's looking or laughing.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the use of strong language or references to sex in music. This song avoids these things, but many don't. Do you think that kind of content is necessary? Does it make a song better or worse?

  • Have you ever had a really bad day? How do you deal with it? Can you relate to what this song talks about?

Tweens Only
This song is catchy, clean and has a fun beat. Hot Chelle Rae fans will not be dissappointed. I also think that this song is neat because the guy in it is deciding to move on after this girlfriend cheats on him (she's a california dime/but it's time for me to quit her), and then just forgetting about it and not dwelling on it, like some heartbreak songs. But this isn't for little kids, better for tweens, because of the cheating line and reference to Zach Galifianak, who starred in "The Hangover". The tattoo line is kind of suggestive for younger ones, too, so I wouldn't recommend it for little children. But overall, Hot Chelle Rae is a mostly clean band, and their decision to steer clear of adult themes is admirable. And the song is cool, too.

Fun song, is appropriete for all kids, teens, and tweens!
This song is totally Fun and just has a good beat. NO USE of bad language, no sex, no drugs, the only thing is that the singer mentions a tattoo, but it really is no big deal. I think this song is fine for kids of all ages, teens, and tweens. Younger kids wont understand most of the references; but its not meant to be serious, its a dance song. The real message is that even when life and people bring you down; have fun anyways, and don't let it stop you from doing the things you do.

Common Sense is wrong!
There is nothing bad in this song at all! I think you should give it a listen, and don't listen to commonsense . org! They are wrong! This song has nothing bad in it at all! And kids (even little ones like 5 or 6 year olds) have seen their parents making out. They may have even said "EWWW!" if they watched the video where the people kiss & make out.

Love it!
I love this song! It's like amazing. It's Pop, but I thought it was Rock. The reason I rated it for 'kids 12 & up', is because maybe they'll understand it more, if only they listen to the lyrics. Overall, great song, for chillin' or partyin'. (I've never partied, but just saying.)
