What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while "Skyscraper" talks about the heartache and pain that come from a failed romance, it doesn't include profanity, references to sex and substances, or violent imagery beyond one mention of being cut by broken glass. It's an age-appropriate song for older tweens.

  • The song describes getting back on your feet after falling on hard times.
  • Encourages listeners to put bad times behind them and continue to move forward.
  • One allusion to being cut by broken glass: "Would it make you feel better to watch me while I bleed / All my windows still are broken but I'm standing on my feet."
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

"SKYSCRAPER" is the first single from Disney pop-starlet Demi Lovato since she finished a stint in rehab for what she called "emotional and physical issues." Using the end of a romantic relationship as a backdrop, the song's lyrics describe picking yourself up after experiencing difficult circumstances: "You can take everything I have, you can break everything I am / Like I'm made of glass, like I'm made of paper / Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground like a skyscraper." Though one line references bleeding after being cut by broken glass, the song doesn't have any profanity or graphic references to sex and substances. Older tweens who can handle sad songs should be fine with this tune.

Is it any good?

On this power ballad, Lovato clearly comes out of the gate looking to prove that she's a musical force to be reckoned with, and she succeeds overall. Her vocals sound better than they ever have, and though the arrangements don't blow you away, it's still a track that will capture your attention.

Amazing!
This is honestly one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. It's so inspirational. Demi Lovato is clearly a very strong person and it's great that she sang a song about her life right now.

Good lyrics/messages
I like the lyrics, but Demi's voice seems fairly starchy, but it really fits in with the lyrics. Also, I don't think this song is mainly about a relationship. I think it's more about the struggle Demi went through before she entered rehab. I think teens will get it more than kids, but it's not innapropriate (although the lyrics are a bit deep/mature).

Very beautiful song
Demi Lovato really did a great job with this song. I was so glad when I heard that she got out of rehab feeling much more better about herself. She's a very strong person and she proves it with this song to show that you shouldn't let others push you down and that you must stand tall and stay strong.

Very Beautiful Song
This is a very touching song. This song brings back memories from my old boyfriend. The song also goes along with her getting back from rehab; she might be singing this song to her depression.

Wonderful!
It talks about her bleeding. But the song itself is amazing and has a WONDERFUL message to it. And goes with Demi's personal struggles and how she is managing through them in a positive way. Recommended for anyone who wants to be encouraged or inspired.

Beautiful + Inspiring
Demi Lavato has gone through some major struggles in the last year. As a young child, she was bullied because of her perfectly normal weight. After a stint in rehab, Demi rises above all the haters and disease she has been struggling with. "Skyscraper" is her way of saying goodbye to heartache and empty love. Demi's voice is beautiful and resounds in a way that makes the message sink in. Beautiful,Demi

Disappointing but OK
I'm not that impressed that she used 'broken glass' as a reference. She did just come out of rehabilitation when she wrote this and I do feel bad that came into the public, ITS HER LIFE. I kinda got bored listening to it, it is slow but its just disappointing, im an upbeat person so...
