What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song is a satirical homage to the infamous red plastic cup that is so popular at parties and the sudsy libations that often go in it. The video shows Toby Keith and scantily clad college-age kids drunk and partying, and the lyrics also celebrate drinking.

  • Celebrates partying and getting drunk.
  • No positive role models; video shows college-age kids drunk, partying, and falling over.
  • Not applicable.
  • Video shows scantily-clad college-age girls drunk and falling over each other.
  •  "Kiss my ass," "testicles."
  • Video features some celebrity figures like basketball star Larry Bird, rockers Sammy Hagar and Ted Nugent, TV show host Craig Ferguson, and baseball pitcher Roger Clemens. Also, Solo Cup is a brand name.
  • Video shows college-age kids drinking and partying and smoking a "bong-like" contraption made out of the notorious red cup. Lyrics are about drinking.

What's the story?

Country star Toby Keith relives the glorious, stupid, and suds-filled college days with "RED SOLO CUP," a satirical spoof/homage to the red Solo brand plastic cup that's often the star of parties and gatherings where beer is served. The video features Keith at a college party, as well as some celebrities like Larry Bird, Roger Clemens, and Ted Nugent sharing their love of the cup and beer.

Is it any good?

"Red Solo Cup" is meant to be fun and not taken too seriously, and it certainly is very catchy and entertaining. Keith vents and rhymes and relives the mindless, carefree life of a college kid. The track is sure to frequent playlists on the college party scene, but it's nothing groundbreaking or award-winning by any means. The video features Keith and college-goers (in bikinis) drinking to the point of stupor and intoxication, so although it's meant to be humourous, it's still best for older teens and up.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about tunes that celebrate drinking. Do these songs ever point out the consequences of drinking, or do they just focus on the fun aspects? What can happen when you consume too much alcohol or experiment with it while underage?

  • This video features some popular sports stars and celebrities drinking from the "red solo cup." What kind of message do you think it sends when celebrities are part of something that may not be appropriate for all ages?

OK for teens
I've seen this music video at school, and it's pretty silly, but still fine for teens who won't be influenced by the song's depiction of drinking. OK for kids 13+ Sex: Music video shows scantily clad college girls drinking and falling over. Language: Use of "ass" Consumerism: Video shows some celebrity figures and Solo Cup, a cup brand, is mentioned. Drinking: The song celebrates drinking to the point of getting drunk, and the music video shows college students drinking excessively.

"Red Solo Cup" The Best Song Ever
I feel that "Red Solo Cup" is a great song to listen to and to just have a good time with friends while lisining to it. Without seeing the music video this song could be about drinking soda or water, the music video also could be about soda or water bucause the word beer is never mentioned it this song. The only "Bad Word" in this song is a** and this is only used one time. Also I do not believe that mrbookworm01 has seen this music video in his school. This video is not school friendly and in now way any teacher in the right mind would show this in a classroom setting. The music video does show people drinking, college girls, and celebritys with the Solo cup but nothing is wrong or influencial about these three things. I highly recomend buying this song.

Repetitive song about stereotypical college lifestyle.
Personally, I find this song incredibly annoying. Yes, it can be funny, but I find it more irritating than entertaining. The focus of the song is college drinking parties, where those red Solo cups, or any color cup for that matter, are definitely popular. It's another song that reinforces the stereotype that drinking and partying are a major part of the American college experience. I'm a college student, and this song sure doesn't describe mine, even though my college has a reputation as a party school. It's satirical humor at the college students' expense.

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE HOW MANY SONGS HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT BEER THAT IS COUNTRY! I am not talking about a music video here folks! If my Grandma lets me listen to this it is for 10 years and up. She is strict about songs but I have listened to this when I was 9. Yeah he says,"when beer runs on back because it's easy to crack around all the women I consider oh,Yucky." Yes it says that. Seriously nothing bad with this song exeptions for........ Drinking,One A word ,and Solo Cup in the cycle of consumeration that everybody hears. Ages 10 and up eh for 7 to 9 and off for 2 to 6.
