What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "If This Was a Movie" is another clean, if not happy, tune by country darling Taylor Swift. The singer doesn't use any profanity or explicit references to describe her feelings of heartache over the end of a relationship. Though she wishes life could be like a movie, where estranged couples often live happily ever after, she doesn't cling to that notion -- setting a good example for young tweens and teens learning to cope with the ups and downs of real-life relationships.

  • The song has a simple, positive message about wishing a relationship hadn't gone wrong but accepting that it did.
  • The song is about remaining in the present and accepting life for what it is.

What's the story?

Country superstar Taylor Swift is back with "IF THIS WAS A MOVIE," a single originally released on the Target-exclusive deluxe edition of her album Speak Now, about a failed romance that she wishes she could revive. Swift sings about how, much as she'd like it to be, her relationship isn't a movie -- where the object of her affection would "stand in the rain outside 'til I came out" -- but that "people change and these things happen."

Is it any good?

Though this track doesn't travel too far beyond Swift's typical musical mode, the singer's rapid-fire delivery of her wholesome lines adds a bit of welcome creativity. The juxtaposed sounds of mandolin and electric guitar lend further appeal to this overall catchy tune.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the differences between the romances shown in movies and those in real life. Do romantic comedies send realistic messages about love?

  • Do you ever feel disappointed that real romances aren't as exciting as movie ones?

Awesomeeee:)
Great song, but younger kids may not understand what it means. Taylor Swift is an awesome role model with wonderful songs! Give it a listen.

Another great Taylor Swift song
I like this song. It's pretty cool. It's about a breakup (which most of Taylor's songs are about) but it's not innapropriate.

Love!
This is the Taylor Swift that everyone knows and love. America's sweetheart is yet once again singing about heart-break. She also refers to "rain" as the perfect romantic place one earth (Stand in the rain outside till I came out). The tune is absolutely well-crafted and catchy, like all her other hits. However, the chorus sounds a bit similar to her other song from the same album "Haunted". Although written in different keys, it sounds extremely similar. In Haunted, the chorus is, "Come on, come on don't leave me like this", while in If This was a Movie, the chorus begins with, "Come back, come back, come back". I don't know what she was thinking while she was writing this song, but I was a bit disappointed with the similar melodies. Hopefully her next album will be an improvement. Other than that, her songs are again, clean and catchy.
