What parents need to know

Parents need to know that although "If I Die Young" doesn't feature profanity or graphic references to sex, substances, or violence, it does have a heavy message about death and what happens afterward. With mentions of being buried, "never knowin' the lovin' of a man," and God/heaven, this tune may elicit a lot of questions from younger tweens.

  • Nothing necessarily positive or negative, just a realistic perspective on death and its aftermath.
  • Heavy message about death and what happens afterward.
  • No overt violence, but a lot of direct talk about death and what comes after, such as being buried underground or in a river.
  • One line about "never knowin' the lovin' of a man."

What's the story?

Country trio (and siblings) The Band Perry already have the afterlife on their minds in "If I Die Young," a single about a person whose life is cut short at an early age. While the song's lyrics don't have profanity or explicit references to sex, substance use, or violence, they still contain mature lines about some of the things in life that a young person will miss out on -- including "the lovin' of a man" -- and what happens after death, such as being buried and going to the "Lord's kingdom." Parents will want to listen closely to this song before letting younger tweens tune in.

Is it any good?

The two-guy, one-girl makeup of The Band Perry plays well here, with Kimberly Perry's smooth lead vocals complemented by the nice backup harmonies, mandolin, and violin from her brothers. The overall effect is a sweet song in the classic new-country vein.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why young teen artists -- like The Band Perry -- would create a song like "If I Die Young."

  • As a young person with a long life in front of you, how can you remind yourself to make the most of every day?

  • Families might want to discuss their values and beliefs when it comes to death and burial.

Why sing about dying young?!?
it has a good beat, and the singings great but talking about dying young??!! i mean who thinks about that, sikos?? It's just not a good song for little kids becuase you don't want them to think about dying young! It's okay, but mabey a pass for some people.

If I Die Young
The music is nice (as well as the singing), but the song is about death which is interesting. It's not innapropriate except for that part. I think it's okay for kids 11+.

Great song.
Nothing really bad about this song. I usually don't like country, but this song I really love. :/ Strange. Try it.

Good but Sad
The only bad thing I have to say about this song, is that the message is sad. "If I die young, bury me in satin, sink me in the river at dawn." That's the only sad part.

Beautiful Song
This song is really good. I've loved it since it was first released. The message about death is a little mature and may be too much for younger kids. I think it's okay for 10+.
