What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Hair" is a clean track that promotes a positive body image. Lacking profanity and graphic references to sex, substance use, and violence, the song uses the topic of styling your hair how you want as a metaphor for being comfortable with your physical appearance. The message is a great one for tweens and teens in need of positive reinforcement as they go through the big physical changes that come with being a teenager.

What's the story?

"HAIR" is the third single from Born This Way, the second album from mega-pop star Lady Gaga. The song is among the singer's cleanest to date -- it's entirely free of profanity, sex, substances, and violence. Its positive message revolves around styling your hair the way you like it, rather than how others think you should -- alluding to the broader idea of being comfortable with your physical appearance: "I just want to be free, I just want to be me ... I don't want to change, and I don't want to be ashamed." Tweens and teens struggling with lots of physical changes will get a boost from this uplifting message.

Is it any good?

"Hair" follows Lady Gaga's super-successful music formula, with a big, driving synth-beat that sounds a lot like many '80s hits and one refreshing exception: a guest performance by Clarence Clemons, sax player for legend Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Combined with the track's positive lyrics, the catchy hook will have lots of kids and adults alike singing along.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why it's important not to ridicule or criticize others for how they look. How would you feel if someone mocked your looks?

  • Lady Gaga is known for her outlandish fashion choices. Are some things unacceptable to wear under any circumstances? Why or why not?

  • Name five things you can do to feel more comfortable in your own skin.

SUCH a disappointment!!!!
Ok, parents. May I talk to you about these lyrics for a sec? The most disrespectful to me are: Whenever I'm dressed cool/My parents put up a fight I scream Mom and Dad/Why can't I be who I wanna be? Now think about it. Do you really want your children singing that? I wouldn't! The tune is boring and the vocals are dim. I can't believe this. She had it again with "The Edge of Glory" but she lost it with this.

"One day I'll be as free as my haiirrr"
YOU PEOPLE ARE WRONG. She actually said on her Facebook page- I read it it said in these exact words "Hair is about how my parents used to get p*ssed off about my outfits and hair" So that is what the song is about- Gaga said it herself! This song is just boring.

The song is really catchy and gaga-ish. Catchy and appropriate for nearly every age. The lyrics are clear and very clever.

boring
Gaga said herself, "Hair is about how my parents used to get p*ssed off about my outfits and hair", you guys are WRONG. But this song is boring. Nothing at all in it. No good message, no violence, no language, no good beat, no sex, no partying. This song is pointless.
