What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Glee: The Music, Vol. 6 is among the cleanest albums yet from the TV show. Featuring a lot of uplifting songs by mostly non-controversial artists like Adele, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, and ABBA, the record contains almost no mature content, aside from one "s--t" in the song "Rolling in the Deep" and references to various sexual orientations in "Born This Way." In general, the CD is a great choice for younger fans of the show.

  • Plenty of positive messages, from having self-esteem to having compassion for others who are going through hard times.
  • Lots of good role model behavior, such as valuing others for who they are inside and having a positive outlook for the future.
  • Not applicable.
  • Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" refers to different sexual orientations: "No matter gay, straight, or bi / lesbian, transgendered life."

What's the story?

GLEE: THE MUSIC, VOL. 6 is the final collection of songs from the second season of the enormously popular TV show, Glee. The album's 18 tracks once again run the gamut of classic and contemporary artists -- including Lady Gaga, Adele, ABBA, Stevie Wonder, and Fleetwood Mac -- along with songs from musicals like West Side Story and Funny Girl and three original tracks written just for the show. By and large, these tracks are clean, with just a couple instances of mature content (the word "s--t" appears in Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" touches on different sexual orientations). Overall, the record is a safe choice for tweens and teens.

Is it any good?

As with just about every Glee album, some of the songs on this CD are better than others. The clear standout is the excellent cover of Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" by the show's vocal powerhouse,  Mercedes (Amber Riley). And though they're somewhat sappy, the three original slow tunes at the end of the album do a good job of showcasing other characters' respectable pipes.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how the tunes reflect some of Glee's second-season themes. For example, do the album's ballads accurately capture the show's many romantic trials and tribulations?

  • How do the tracks about having self-confidence apply to circumstances encountered by the show's characters in the second season?

  • Name some other tunes that would have been good fits for the show's themes.
