What parents need to know

Parents need to know that "Dance A$$" is an explicit, demeaning rap single with an intense focus on the female body. Its heavily sexual lyrics describe various hardcore scenarios, with lots of profanity ("f--k," "p---y," etc.) thrown in. It's definitely not a track for younger ears.

  • This song objectifies women to the extreme and talks about how they should "pay" stars like Big Sean in "sex."
  • Most parents wouldn't want their kids emulating the behavior mentioned in the song.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some hardcore descriptions of various sexual experiences; for example: "F--k that you gonna get some d--k today/I walk in with my crew and I'm breaking they necks/I'm looking all good I'm making her wet."

What's the story?

"DANCE A$$," featuring Nicki Minaj, is a remixed single originally on Finally Famous, the first full-length album by Midwest rapper Big Sean. True to its title, the track focuses largely on one aspect of the female body -- the behind -- but goes into graphic detail about other body parts as well.

Is it any good?

Sometimes Minaj sounds like a gnat in your ear -- a grating, high-pitched tone that won't go away. Though catchy at times, the synth-beat here sounds largely the same, and Big Sean's droning, uninspired delivery doesn't do much to punch things up.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the difference between appreciating an attractive person and identifying that person only with her or his looks.

  • Is the song complimenting a woman or objectifying her? How do you know?

Not the root of all evil, and catchy as all hell.
I don't get exactly how this "demeans" or "objectifies" women. Okay, possibly "objectify". But if this song makes women an object, It's one that's appreciated properly. There's a lot of swearing and sexuality, but there's no reason to freak out over sexism. If anything, this is representative of the way hip-hop as genre treats women: appreciated, accepted, but slurred against and undermined.

Can't Touch MC Hammer
This song is more annoying than catchy. And it totally objectifies women if it wasn't obvious. MC Hammer is probably embarrassed at this song, which samples part of Can't Touch This. I wouldn't let a kid listen to the radio version because it's sending a bad message about treating women like objects. Pass on this one!

Great Song, Just Sooo Wrong
I love nicki minaj to death, but this song crosses the line just a little to far. This song isnt only inappropriate its EXPLICT. They put it all out there for anyone to pick up on. The whole song is a swear for every sentance.

It's okay
I'm not offended by swearing or sex, and I love rap, but these lyrics are just stupid. Big Sean is a pretty good rapper, and so is Nicki Minaj (not on this song though) and the beat are catchy. It's not bad, just not good.
