What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the lyrics to "Cheers (Drink to That)" revolve around drinking to forget your problems. While the song doesn't include a lot of other mature content like violence, sex, or profanity, the overarching message about blowing off steam through too much drinking is iffy at best.

  • A not-so-positive message about drowning your troubles with alcohol.
  • The song has a singular focus -- drinking to excess on a weekend to try to forget about a difficult week. Not exactly role-model behavior.
  • Not applicable.
  • Not applicable.
  • "Bastards."
  • Name-drops include Jameson, Ray-Ban, Tyra Banks.
  • The entire song revolves around drinking and presents drinking as a way to forget about problems. Consequences aren't mentioned.

What's the story?

"CHEERS (DRINK TO THAT)" is a track from the album Loud by R&B superstar Rihanna. The song has a singular focus -- drinking to excess on a weekend to try to forget about a difficult week: "Cheers to the freaking weekend ... Oh let the Jameson sink in ... Don't let the bastards get you down, turn it around with another round."

Is it any good?

Rihanna adds a dual reggae-pop flair to this smooth song, sampling Avril Lavigne's "I'm with You" while infusing her own vocals with an island tone. The overall effect is nothing earth shattering, but its mellow groove is suited to hanging with good friends during downtime.

Lighten up!!
K, the song isnt that bad!! It has a good beat, but seriously, Common Sense needs to lighten up. Yeah, the whole song revolves around drinking, but it's not like kids are going to listen to it, and then get bored so they decide to go drink obsessively. Just because the song may endorse drinking doesn't mean kids will listen to it and develop a drinking problem...

Annoyed me at first
There's nothing really bad about this song. Rihanna has a wonderful voice and while I don't nearly appreciate people giving negative words to her song that she has worked on for maybe months. The only part that annoys me is the, "yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah" and so on(I think it was Avril Lavigne)

Good for me, not for them.
It's ok, I really like the song, but I wouldn't let my younger siblings, 8+9, listen to it. There are drugs and such, but I am mature enough to listen and understand, but the little kids won't understand and might go to school like that.

"Not bad"
This song is not that bad! It's not about drowning your sorrows in alchol! Kids WON'T drink when they hear it. Common sense, they aren't that stupid.
