What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this soundtrack to the popular Disney movie doesn't feature as many vocal songs as the first Cars soundtrack (only five), but it's still a great set of country-rock tunes and instrumental music by acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino that parents and kids can both enjoy.

What's the story?

Everyone's favorite race car and tow truck are together again in Cars 2, this time on a trip around the world from London to Tokyo. The soundtrack, composed mostly by Michael Giacchino, features a charming duet between country cowboy Brad Paisley and eccentric Brit Robbie Williams, a Tokyo-techno groove, and a French serenade about the (horse)power of love.

Is it any good?

Part of what made the first Cars soundtrack so entertaining was the music of artists like Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and James Taylor -- just to name a few. On the Cars 2 soundtrack, there are only five songs with lyrics, while the rest of the 26 tracks are instrumental. Although Weezer's remake of The Cars classic "You Might Think" is spectacular, and Paisley once again lends his talent and smooth-as-velvet country croon to a few tracks, you're left wanting a few more catchy songs to sing along with.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what makes a soundtrack successful. Is it the music, the artists, or both? Would you buy a soundtrack simply based on who's singing on it?

  • One song on this album is about the "collision of worlds" -- in this case, American vs. British. What are some ways that you can appreciate or respect someone else's differences, such as background, likes, language, etc?
