What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Zombieville USA 2 is a shooter game with cartoon graphics and a fair bit of animated blood. Players take on waves of zombies, killing them with a staggering arsenal of weapons at their disposal (though most have to be bought with in-game cash as you progress in the game). There's a lot of blood, but it's bright, not gory, and doesn't pool on the ground. It's noteworthy that though there are plenty of weapons and upgrades to purchase, the game does not feature an in-app purchase option to exchange real world cash for in-game currency. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The controls are well laid-out, and the game gently eases you into the zombie invasions. Avoiding the undead and keeping your ammo levels high is the tricky part.
  • The game pits you against a constant stream of zombies in each level; you kill the zombies with a huge arsenal of weapons, including guns, automatic weapons, baseball bats, flamethrowers, RPGs, mines, and more. When zombies die, there's cartoon blood -- and when the zombies attack your character, that cartoon blood flows copiously as they make munching sounds.

  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple’s Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party’s Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender’s email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

If you're looking for a plot-driven zombie game, ZOMBIEVILLE USA 2 isn't it. If, however, you're looking for a straightforward battle against hordes of the undead, it's right up your alley. The violence in the game is nonstop, but cartoonish -- almost cute. And the selection of weapons is refreshingly wide. What's best about the game is there's no set way to play. You can storm into the thick of battle, guns blazing, or spend most of the level's allotted time running away.

Especially noteworthy is the game's cooperative play mode (via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi), which makes it a social app. And kudos to the developers for bypassing the easy in-app purchase route, forcing players to earn their upgrades.

Parents... think before you block
The game isn't that bad. I have an iPhone 4s and the app at age 11. It's not that violent. My friend at school first showed me the game on Electronics Day. We could bring up to 3 electronics of our choice. He brought his iPod Touch. He showed me the game and I thought it was pretty cool. Remember parents, these are fake. They're video games. This is the type of stuff boys like. The like games with guns and zombies and all that stuff. I've seen some games for Wii and Xbox 360 that are similar like this and the ESRB was usually 10+ so I think the appropriate age for this game is 10+

Violent, but unrealistic
Though it does have nonstop violence, it is very, very unrealistic and cartoony. You can blow zombies heads off, burn them to crisps, slice them in half, freeze them and knock them over so they shatter, bludgen them with baseball bats, you get the picture. Brains and blood fly's splattering the ground with gore. It's pretty gross, but it's all super cartoony. Plus, your deffending yourself. And the things your mutilating are already dead.

Good game is cartoonish but very bloody.
Its a good game, but my parents wouldn't let me download Zombieville USA until a few months ago. Its very gory, when you shoot a zombie you can se blood and brain matter and chunks of flesh go flying across the screen, and you can chop them in half with fire axes and chainsaws and see their upper body fall to the ground while their lower body sprays blood.
