What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Tank Hero is an arcade-style tank fighting game where players attempt to destroy all other tanks before they are blown up. The game is single player only, so there is never any aggression directed at other human players. And while the focus of the game is certainly a violent one, it's done in a benign manner, rather than one that glorifies the explosions. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The game has a gentle learning curve that sufficiently prepares players for later levels when it's certainly more challenging to stay alive.
  • The point of the game is to destroy other tanks using various forms of artillery. There are explosions, but the violence is not overly glorified. Artillery ranges from standard rounds to howitzers to homing missiles.

  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

TANK HERO isn't a game that will win any awards for the depth of its gameplay, but as far as fun diversions go, it's a great one. As much arcade as it is action, the game forces players to constantly move to avoid enemy fire, but to properly maneuver their tanks into positions where they can take out opposing forces.

The result is a game that's intense but not stressful or frustrating. It's fun, and there are enough levels to keep players satisfied, especially with the game's low price.
