What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Super Crossfire HD is a Space Invaders-like game that allows players to shoot enemy ships. The violence is minimal, with explosions resulting in bursts of light that look more like fireworks than destruction.  Users who want to take a shortcut can buy upgrades via an in-app purchase, but it's not necessary, as collecting "victory points" is a fairly easy process that occurs naturally.

  • The controls involve simply moving your finger back and forth on screen. While the game ramps up in difficulty the further in you go, it's nothing that will cause severe frustration.
  • While there's plenty of shooting, it's all bright lights and explosions. No human or animal is targeted.

  • Users can buy "victory points" via in-app purchase; the points can be redeemed for power-ups to your ship.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos, create a profile, set location, post scores on leaderboards, add friends, post status messages, and connect with Facebook friends or Twitter followers. The Crystal privacy policy states that it may collect and use information including name, email address, a phone’s Unique Device ID, and IP address. Crystal gives users the option to disagree to terms and conditions, after which new personal data will not be stored on their servers. This will reduce the functionality of the Crystal network for the user.

Is it any good?

SUPER CROSSFIRE has been charming people since it was an independent game on Xbox Live, but in a rare twist, it actually works better on a touch screen than it does with a controller. It also becomes a must-play game for anyone who spent part of their youth in a video game arcade. The Space Invaders homage is impossible to miss, but the game adds enough twists and turns that it sheds the clone label and stands on its own.

The in-app purchases seem superfluous and a bit of a money grab, but that issue aside, this is one of the rare apps that kids and adults alike will both love.
