What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the Sheeps HD is a cross between a puzzle and platform game. The premise is simple: Get three sheep of graduated sizes from one side of the screen to the other. But this requires jumping, pressing buttons, tilting levers, and other strategic moves. You'll also need to decide which sheep to use for which task, and in which order. Kids are likely to enjoy early levels, but later levels may prove too frustrating for all but the most dedicated puzzle-solvers.

  • Early levels of this game are fairly straightforward, but as they progress, they become more fiendish, include time constraints, and have the possibility of mistakes you can't recover from. The game is part platformer, and some of the platforms are tricky to land on. The app does allow you to change between navigation buttons and an onscreen joystick so kids can try both and see which feels easier.
  • Sheep can fall off a cliff. There is no blood, but the level will restart.

  • The game provides early hints for free, but charges $.99 to unlock all hints later in the game. Since you can't progress without completing a previous level, players may be inclined to either buy hints or unlock all levels (also $.99), or both.
  • The app is heavily connected to Twitter (Twitter buttons everywhere). This can be turned off in the settings menu. Kids can't send messages to Twitter unless there is an account logged in on the device, but if so, there is also the option to add a location to the message.

Is it any good?

THE SHEEPS HD is a funky little puzzler with 30 levels of challenge. The graphics and sound are cute, and the puzzles are creative. The difficulty ramps up a bit too quickly and the controls don't always do what you want them to, making this best for those who enjoy working a puzzle over and over again to solve it. It's also hard to not be annoyed that a hint costs half as much as the app itself. This is an app with a lot of potential, but your kids' enjoyment of it is all going to come down to their patience level. Kids who really like a challenge will probably wish this had more levels. Others will put it down and never look back.
