What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Royal Trouble: Hidden Adventures HD is a hidden object and puzzle solving adventure story involving a prince and a princess who find themselves kidnapped and locked away in a strange castle. They discover they must work together to escape. The story is narrated but dialogue and mini-game text is not voiced, so younger children may need help with reading. More than one child can play this adventure and progress at their own speed, and puzzles that are too difficult for the younger children can be skipped to move the story forward.

  • Easy to play with simple taps and tap and drag, with visual hints and a hint book that is visible on the screen.
  • Not applicable.
  • Although the graphics are stylized like Disney cartoons, the female character has a low-cut gown, and one of the cut scenes is a top down view as she climbs up a wall.
  • Language is perfectly clean. Even when angry at each other, the characters do not call each other names.
  • The game is free to download and try, but the full game must be unlocked for $6.99.
  • The app asks players to review the game and this opens up a browser window out of the game. Players get the option to post achievements to Facebook.

Is it any good?

ROYAL TROUBLE: HIDDEN ADVENTURES HD will appeal to kids who enjoy adventure stories and role-playing games as well as a good princess tale. The handsome Prince Nathaniel and beautiful Princess Loreen are brave and smart, but in the beginning they bicker and snipe at each other in a humorous fashion. Once they begin helping each other in their attempt to escape captivity, they find that the other isn't so bad after all, and that they will better further their goals working as a team. And, of course, they eventually fall in love and live happily ever after.

The main characters are charming and the adventure filled with twists and turns. A narrator leads the story, and while there is no character animation, the graphics are fairytale-like and charming, and sounds like the flapping of a flag and the coo of pigeons help create an immersive environment that kids can lose themselves in.
