What parents need to know

Parents need to know that A Royal Christmas is a well-done book and activity app that heavily promotes the Disney Princess brand. As kids are reading or listening to the story, they are also looking for ornaments to hang on a Christmas tree in an ornament hunt game that runs throughout the app. This encourages kids to pay close attention to the original princess stories here, featuring Disney's Cinderella, Tiana, and Ariel. There are also coloring pages and puzzles, as well as the opportunity to record your own voice reading the stories.

  • Very easy to play. Younger kids may need help choosing which format they want it read in initially, but once the book is being read the prompts help kids figure out what to press to collect ornaments and how to play the games.

  • The Disney and Disney Princess logos are displayed prominently on multiple pages. A "gift this app" option is located in the upper left hand corner of the main page; click on it and players are moved out of the app into the App Store to purchase the app as a gift. On the info page, there are two banner-style ads for more Disney book apps, and a place to sign up for email updates fro Disney books. And, of course, the Disney princesses that are at the heart of the app are brands unto themselves.
  • Mostly private. You can insert an email address to be notified of Disney products.

Is it any good?

The stories on A ROYAL CHRISTMAS app are fresh and sweet, and in typical Disney style the app is well-designed and beautiful to look at. It's fun for princess fans to see how their favorite princess celebrates Christmas. The games are simple and the ornament game, for which players collect ornaments to "hang" on a tree on the app, provides an organizing, attention-keeping thread through the stories.
