What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Roll in the Hole is a puzzle-arcade game where your roly-poly Panda is on an eternal quest for ice cream pops. The game is free of any commercialism, sex, violence, or other potentially objectionable content, but the quick ramp-up to difficult levels could be too frustrating for some younger players (as well as some older ones). Users can share high scores via the Game Center or Crystal social networks, but participation is optional.

  • The play mechanics are very simple (simply touch the side of the screen you want the panda to roll toward), but the game does ramp up in difficulty fairly quickly.

  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Crystal, an interactive network that allows users to upload real avatar photos; create a profile; add friends set location; post scores on leaderboards, Facebook, and Twitter; and post status messages. Users can opt in to Game Center to track achievements instead; it does not have connections to other social media within the app.

Is it any good?

While ROLL IN THE HOLE certainly has its entertaining qualities, you can't help but feel you're playing a paint-by-numbers arcade/puzzle app. Cutesy lead character? Check. Happy looping background music? It's in there. Physics-based controls that can be occasionally frustrating? Roger that.

The game certainly isn't bad, but it's a slightly different take on countless other offerings in the app store. It shines, though, by not forcing players to complete particularly difficult levels, allowing them the option of skipping when they get too frustrated. The decision not to take advantage of the gyroscope for the controls was curious one, though. And the difficulty ramps up too quickly for most players, who will likely be growling at the game by the mid-teen levels.
