What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Piece me BIRDS! is a simple puzzle app for young kids. This app series has a focus on the artists behind the images, so kids can learn a little more than just doing the puzzles. The app advertises other puzzle apps but does not provide a link to the iTunes App Store.

  • The app is very simple to use: Tap on one of the images on the home screen to pick a puzzle. Drag pieces to place them on the outlines, and they click into place. The puzzle can be reset, and after completion swiping will go to the next puzzle. You can also tap the logo at any time to return to the home screen.

Is it any good?

There are a lot of puzzle apps in the App Store, but most of them don't tell you anything about the artists behind the images. Fashionbuddha decided to focus on the artwork, and has created a series of puzzle apps that are fun for kids and promote the artists. PIECE ME BIRDS! is the first in the series, and has seven different bird puzzles for kids to complete. Upon completion, the name of the bird is displayed (and said out loud), and the bird is animated.

The images by Amy Ruppel are fun and colorful, and the interface is easy to use, with pieces clicking into place when they're dragged to the right spot. One nice touch about the app (designed by a parent) is that there are no links within the app to take you to a browser or the App Store. Amy Ruppel's website URL is displayed, but parents will need to manually open a browser to view it, which prevents kids from getting online from within the app.
