What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Piczle Lines is a challenging puzzle game that requires logic and counting to draw pictures on a grid. The free game is playable, but there are also many more puzzle packs that can be purchased in-app. The controls are easy to learn but can sometimes be finicky, and the difficulty of the puzzles can challenge even adults. Also, there is an option to connect the app to a Facebook account. There are some pictures in the puzzle packs that may reference drinking or violence, but most of the pictures do not.

  • The app allows you to zoom in on a section of the puzzle to work on it and then zoom out for more details. Drawing lines is simple, and partial lines can be left for later. Double-tapping a line erases it, but double-tapping a blank space zooms in and out. Sometimes the app couldn't differentiate between line-editing gestures and view-control gestures.
  • In the Halloween puzzle pack, one of the pictures is a bloody axe.

  • Piczle Lines comes with one free puzzle pack, but there are many more available for purchase in-app. With the included pack and the free packs in the store, there are 100 puzzles to solve. There are also links to the developer's website and lists of other games by the developer, and a link to the App Store.
  • The last puzzle in the first Story Mode pack is a "Tasty Cocktail" to complete the photo of the professor on the beach.
  • Minor privacy concerns. Piczle Lines allows the user to connect to their Facebook account to post scores, but this is optional.

Is it any good?

PICZLE LINES is a collection of "paint-by-pairs" or "link-a-pix" puzzles: Players are presented with a grid with numbers scattered across it, sometimes in different colors and sometimes in black and white. Matching numbers must be connected to each other with a line that same number of squares. When done correctly the results will be a picture. Piczle Lines puts the puzzle-solving into a story about a professor whose vacation photos have been corrupted and need to be fixed; as puzzles are solved the professor's pictures return.

The puzzles are quite addictive, and some can be quite a challenge to solve. The interface is well-designed; though the controls are sometimes finicky, overall it's a satisfying experience for people who enjoy logic-based puzzles. While there are many puzzle packs to purchase in-app, the included puzzles and free packs provide plenty of opportunity to try the game out.
