What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Pickle's Paper Dolls is an adorable app that allows kids to dress up girls from five different cultures. It also provides a tiny language lesson in that the dolls say hello and provide words in their languages for certain items of clothing, plus another mini-lesson in geography, as a map graphic of each doll's country is shown next to the doll. There are about 200 items of clothing and other accessories and facial and hair choices for each doll. But most are pretty much strictly in modern American style -- there's not a lot of true-to-life cultural representation here in clothing or background choices.

  • Very easy to play. Even very young app users will be able to dress up dolls and save their creations.
  • Not applicable.
  • The paper dolls start out in a bra or undershirt and underwear, but they're not at all depicted in a provocative or sexual nature.
  • Not applicable.
  • Tap a little icon on the main screen, and it moves you to a "Fun apps we've made for you" page, promoting the developer's other similar apps. But you can lock the "other apps" button in the settings so it won't show up at all.
  • Kids can email photos of their dress-up dolls from the app.

Is it any good?

Pickle is a little girl who loves paper dolls. PICKLE'S PAPER DOLLS is an app that will likely make a paper doll lover out of your kid, too. Pickle has five paper dolls from the U.S., Argentina, Ethiopia, England, and France. It's great to see beauty from a variety of cultures celebrated in a way that little kids can related to, through dress up. It would be nice to see even more represented, as well as more cultural clothing choices and backgrounds that really look like the homes and landscapes of each of the girl's countries. That said, Pickle's Paper Dolls is a precious, sweet app that shows little kids that beauty emanates from girls in cultures throughout the world.
