What parents need to know

Parents need to know that NFL Flick Quarterback is an arcade-style sports game that is licensed by the NFL. The sole purpose of the game is to hone passing skills, targeting receivers and avoiding interceptions, so there's no tackling or other violent aspects of the game on display. The game also features a trick show mode, where you knock buckets over by throwing a ball at them. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

  • The game's controls are very basic and easy to grasp.
  • Not applicable.
  • Cheerleaders in cleavage-bearing outfits and short shorts dance and cheer in each game.
  • Not applicable.
  • The NFL is a licensed brand and all of the teams are on display here, but there are no ads in stadiums for anything besides the league. There are, however, links to other games from the NFL and the developer from the main menu.
  • Some privacy concerns. Players can opt in to Apple's Game Center to track scores and achievements, and for some games, challenge friends. Players can send and receive friend requests using an email address or Game Center nickname, revealing the first and last name associated with each party's Apple ID and, in the case of email requests, the sender's email address. With iOS 5, players can opt to have a private or public profile, which can include a photo. With a public profile, your real name is visible to all other players, and Game Center will recommend you to other players using your real name. With a private profile, only your friends can see your real name, and Game Center will not recommend you to other players.

Is it any good?

It may never be accused of being a deep game, but NFL FLICK QUARTERBACK is a supremely entertaining title that is sure to please. The objective is simple: Make increasingly accurate passes and trick shots to rise through the ranks. There's very little strategy, but it also gives casual football fans a chance to play a licensed game featuring their favorite team without having to stress over calling the wrong play.

The visuals are fantastic. The trivia bits interspersed throughout the game are interesting. And none of the play modes is a clunker. It's a terrific time waster -- and we mean that in the kindest way possible.
