What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Millie & The Lost Key is the second interactive book app in the Millie series. The story stars a loveable little dog named Millie, who goes on a quest to find the Lost Key to Endless Bacon (Millie's favorite food). In addition to the usual modes that let kids read out loud or follow along with a narrator, there's a third "bedtime mode" that creates a more subdued experience for nighttime reading by lowering the sound level, skipping games, and dimming the screen. A portion of the app's sales proceeds go to the Petfinder.com charitable foundation.

  • Using the app is quite easy, but very young kids will need some guidance about where to tap or swipe the screen to enjoy the interactive elements.

Is it any good?

MILLIE & THE LOST KEY continues the tongue-in-cheek humor of the first app, Meet Millie. The story, shown via a unique mixture of real-life photos and cartoon enhancements, reveals that Millie's "epic journey" is actually a jaunt to the park, where she finds herself in various non-threatening situations, which are nevertheless played up by the narrative as part of a grand adventure. Kids can interact with the pages through onscreen buttons and pull-tabs, and there are hidden stickers to collect on every page. The story is somewhat disjointed, but it offers the kind of humor that appeals to both kids and parents on different levels.
