What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hanukkah: The Festival of Lights StoryChimes is a simple, beautifully illustrated retelling of the story of how the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah began. Kids can have the story read to them by a narrator or read it themselves via the text under the illustrations. This storybook app both provides history and culture lessons, and it also provides a simple moral lesson in how one person's brave stand against oppression -- and a miracle -- can impact history. The app also includes a simple memory matching game at the end.

  • Very easy to play. The story can be read to kids, or kids can read it without narration. The pages have back and forth, up and down arrows to move kids through the text and book with ease. The matching memory game is also standard and easy to play.
  • There are a few depictions of fighting with swords and hand-to-hand combat.

  • Kids are encouraged to email or post something about this app on Facebook. At the end of the book, there's a full page of more StoryChimes titles to choose from, and a child's voice narrates the message: "If you enjoyed this Storychime, check out our other exciting titles!"

Is it any good?

HANUKKAH: THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS tells the historic story behind today's Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. But kids don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this story, which is retold in simple enough language and storyline for even the youngest listeners to understand. The history and religious culture lessons as well as a bit of information about the current traditions associated with the holiday are all well-told and illustrated in this just-long-enough story. Moreover, the simple themes in this story of bravery in the face of oppression and of miracles are uplifting. This app could have been made better by moving the publisher's promotional page for its other storybook apps off the story's ending page.
